Shy to be a Fashionista!

I'm writing this in a slightly intoxicated state- So I apologize in advance for typos and grammatical errors!
Tonight I went to celebrate the anniversary of a circuit training class I used to do- The group is made up of some fantastic women (and an overly exuberant young man!) with so many diverse backgrounds and interests. We all got together to celebrate with "Shots and squats" and needless to say, more calories were ingested than those burned.

A wonderful young woman, who I always found so quiet and cute, got a lil bit tipsy (understatement of the week!) and started really opening up to me about how much she loves Nomore Fashionvictims and looks forward to my blogposts! I was beyond flattered and excited! She is so adorable and great! I really appreciated her saying these things! I didn't even know she was a follower. Something else she said really stood out to me though- She said that she adores Pinterest fashion stuff- but just saves the pics and will never wear them! She's too shy about how people would judge her for dressing outside the box or for drawing attention to herself! This hurt me :( She talked about LOVING fashion and nail art and makeup, but stifled this passion because of her fear of judgment. Not cool.

In Trinidad, we definitely have a culture of gossip, macoing and criticism. STOP! Fashion is an artistic expression that can be utilised as a tool to inspire wonderful feelings. We should support one another to try new things and encourage our fellow fashionistas to push the envelope. It is this third world behaviour of being afraid to change and grow that keeps us as laggards in the fashion cycle. Trends reach us last. We scoff at anything different. It's almost as though we seek approval from the rest of the world before we adopt a variation in our style. STOP. Allow people to feel free to express themselves freely like little expressionists. People are illuminated by newness and should therefore applaud those who step outside the box.

To the fabulous young woman who influenced this blogpost- You are phenomenal! Be nothing less. (V.S.)

Imagine if Coco Chanel decided to conform and was scared of what people would think.
