I want a Fashion's Night Out!!!

Trinidad has been teasing us with our "Fashion Week" for a couple years now. Is it on? Is it off? Bleh. So far we're on for October 24th to 28th but something is missing still---- Fashion's Night Out!!!

Our Fashion Week (and don't mean to be a dark cloud here) is really not for the Trini- Fashionistas. The runway trends aren't necessarily attractive or things that we will wear in our usual routines. The designers still need to master things like fabric, drape and taste. Don't get me wrong- I have great respect for local clothiers like Meiling and Claudia Pegus- but they are 2 among the stampede of over-zealous seamstresses who create what they like, and pay no mind to the desires and requirements of the pop-culture market. Their clothing is barely even available after the shows anyway! The it-girls at the clubs and the fancy events rarely sport Sean Griffith's ruffles, but instead run to the Facebook sellers and other online stores, as well as the Miami-stocked local boutiques. What they sacrifice in quality, they gain in trendiness and style. I'm starting to succumb to this idea of this inexpensive, yet wearable fashion-- perhaps it is just our culture since our designers are not offering many options to us.

The trend-lovers may feel out of place in a Trinidad Fashion Week fashion show, but they still want a taste of the polyester pie! Wouldn't it be great if our favourite stores stayed open all night and threw parties in honour of fashion week? I know I would be store-hopping for sure that night! We do have that problem of not having a fashion district-- so how about if each store threw a mini party, say at 51 degrees? They can each use a different booth or something. They can each print different tees to represent their stores and that they're partaking in FNO. Oh the excitement.

My ideas might be limited, plus I don't have my own store so I don;t know the implications. I'm willing to help put this together. I'm sure there are some of you out there who may be interested.

Think we can make it happen?
